Training and Development

Our trainee wholetime firefighters attend a 3 month training course at a Scottish Fire and Rescue Service College site.

Our trainee Retained Duty System (RDS) firefighters attend a 2-week training course at a Scottish Fire and Rescue Service site, with a further two weeks being required normally within the first few months of employment.

Whilst attending the initial training course, you will learn basic core competence skills including operation of fire service ladders, fire appliances and pumps including various other pieces of fire and rescue service equipment. You will also be trained in how to deal with road traffic collisions and to support this will learn basic first aid skills. During this time there will be an element of evening work required to record training activities and consolidation of learning on our tailored IT programme.

From the time you join until the moment you leave, education and training forms a highly significant part of virtually every working day.  This training, along with direct ‘front-line’ experience, will help you to develop.

If you show the necessary drive, determination and enthusiasm, there are many senior level positions to which you can aspire.
