Wholetime firefighter
Find out more about wholetime firefighter role at SFRS and how to apply.
Wholetime firefighter
Becoming a firefighter with SFRS is a rewarding career. It comes with a wide variety of opportunities and no two days will ever be the same.
There are many ways to advance in your career. You can specialise or develop your skills in several areas, including:
- Prevention and fire safety
- Driving fire appliances
- Safe working at height
- Mentoring younger people
- Working with partners and other emergency services
As a service, we believe in a positive work-life balance. Our firefighters work on a four day on, four day off shift pattern with alternating two day runs on daytime and night-time shifts.
Being a firefighter is not a normal 9 to 5 job. While shift patterns are irregular, you may find it leaves you with more flexibility in your day-to-day life.
Modern Apprenticeships
Our firefighter training and development programme is now completed as a Modern Apprenticeship programme. This does not alter any entry requirements. Now, at the end of the three-year programme, trainees will have completed a Modern Apprenticeship qualification as well as an SVQ.
