Wildfire warning in place for Eastern Highlands, Eastern and Southern Scotland

The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS), in conjunction with the Scottish Wildfire Forum (SWF), is issuing a warning for a very high risk of wildfire across Eastern Highlands, Eastern and Southern Scotland from today (Wednesday, 12 August) until Thursday, 13 August.

SFRS’ Head of Operational Delivery and SWF Chair, Deputy Assistant Chief Officer Kenny Barbour, said: “It’s extremely important members of the public exercise extreme caution and think twice before using anything involving a naked flame during a wildfire warning.

“These fires place a huge drain on our resources and pose a threat to the safety of our firefighters and members of our communities."

Wildfires are a growing problem in Scotland. They have a huge impact on the environment, wildlife and the economy, but also have the potential to affect infrastructure and property.

This warning comes as firefighters continue to work in the Cairngorms, four weeks after the wildfire first started. Crews are dampening down hotspots within the area.

Human behaviour can significantly lower the chances of a wildfire starting, so it is crucial that people act safely and responsibly in rural environments and always follow the Scottish Outdoor Access Code.
