Supporting the safe delivery of the Commonwealth Games 2026 in Glasgow

The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service's ongoing efforts to plan and prepare for the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow this summer have been outlined in a report by His Majesty’s Fire Service Inspectorate in Scotland (HMFSI).

The full report, which can be viewed on the HMFSI website, concluded that SFRS is appropriately prepared for the event.

The Games will take place at a number of venues across the city from 23 July - 2 August.

Scottish Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) will be deploying Tactical Liaison Officers at a variety of event locations to quickly assess any issues to minimise disruption to athletes, officials and spectators.

This will include monitoring fire alarm activations and reporting any relevant information to the Multi-Agency Coordination Centre in the city.

The Service's planning team has significant experience of supporting large scale and high-profile events, including the 2014 Commonwealth Games and the UN Climate Change Conference in Glasgow in 2021.

Area Commander Mark Cleland, who is leading on the Service's operational preparedness for the Commonwealth Games, welcomed the HMFSI report. He said: "Our staff will play a key role in supporting the safe delivery of this event and we look forward to working with all our partners to make this a Games that Scotland can be proud of.

"Our personnel will work to safeguard public safety at the event and maintain business as usual operational resilience in the city and beyond for all emergencies."

As part of SFRS' preparations, the organisation has been working closely with the hospitality sector to ensure fire safety measures are in place, including at hotels and official venues, as part of a routine auditing programme in the city.

Area Commander Cleland also has advice for those who plan to rent a room or property during event time. He added: "If you have guests paying to stay in your property you must comply with the law to keep them safe from fire.

"These standards apply at all times - not just for major events like the Commonwealth Games.

"You must carefully consider the fire safety arrangements and measures that need to be put in place within the property. Guests will be in a new environment so it’s important to safeguard them by having adequate fire detection in place and ensuring they are aware of their emergency escape plan."
