SFRS remembers Kilbirnie Street fire
The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) is today remembering the Kilbirnie Street fire in Glasgow, where seven firefighters lost their lives while serving their community 54 years ago.
The tragedy happened on 25 August 1972 at a textiles warehouse on Kilbirnie Street.
Those who lost their lives were Divisional Officer Andrew Quinn, Leading Fireman Alistair Crofts and Firemen Iain Bermingham, Allan Finlay, William Hooper, Duncan McMillan and James Rook.
An annual memorial service took place at Glasgow Necropolis, where attendees included SFRS Chief Officer Stuart Stevens, along with representatives from the SFRS Board, Glasgow City Council, the Fire Brigades Union, SFRS Family Support Trust and The Fire Fighters Charity.
Chief Officer Stevens paused to remember the firefighters and reflect on their sacrifice.
He said: "We pay tribute to those who lost their lives as respected professional firefighters and colleagues, while recognising that they were also much-loved fathers, husbands, brothers and sons.
“Their legacy continues to inspire us today, 54 years later, and their memory lives on as a proud part of our history.
“The ultimate sacrifice made by the seven brave men fighting the Kilbirnie Street fire will always be remembered. Our thoughts will always be with them and their families.”
