On call firefighter and college lecturer writes A-Z guide on perimenopause

On-call firefighter Sam Anderson has written a refreshingly honest guide to perimenopause, inspired by his partner’s lived experience.

Scottish Fire and Rescue Service on call firefighter and college lecturer, Sam Anderson, has penned a candid guide on perimenopause after witnessing his partner’s experience, aiming to help others better support their loved ones.

Sam, who is based at Innerleithen Community Fire Station in the Scottish Borders, combines his firefighting role with his work as a Health and Social Care lecturer at Borders College.

The 49‑year‑old has written Perimenopause: The A–Z Guide for Us Idiots.  He was inspired to write the book after seeing first‑hand the challenges his partner faced during perimenopause.

Keen to expand his knowledge further, Sam began researching the topic and, through his college role, he completed training with NHS Healthy Lives. He was also among the first men in Scotland to be trained as a Menopause Champion.

Sam says the book is for those who want to learn how to be a supportive ally to their partner, family, friend or colleague throughout their perimenopause journey.

Drawing on real‑life insight, the light-hearted guide highlights the importance of shared understanding and open, informed conversations between those going through perimenopause and the people around them.

Sam, who joined the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service in 2024, said: “I wanted to explain it in a way that men could easily understand, and using humour helps to break down barriers.

“So far, it’s been effective in sparking open conversations between men and their friends and partners, which was always my aim to encourage honest dialogue.”

The book, which is available online, has already reached an international audience, with readers as far afield as Australia.
