Improved Welfare Facilities at Dundee Airport Training Site

A programme of welfare improvements at the SFRS Highlands and Islands Airports Ltd (HIAL) Dundee Airport Training Site has now been successfully completed.

A programme of welfare improvements at the SFRS Highlands and Islands Airports Ltd (HIAL) Dundee Airport Training Site has now been successfully completed.

This marks an important milestone in creating a more compliant and fit‑for‑purpose training environment.

The £23,000 investment, funded by SFRS, follows extensive collaboration from departments including property, health and safety, instructors, the site’s fireground technician, and HIAL colleagues.

Over recent months, these teams have worked together to implement improvements at the site, which is leased from HIAL.

The completed upgrades include a warm‑water external sink to support Breathing Apparatus set decontamination, a protective canopy to shield staff in adverse weather, a designated fire‑kit disrobe area, and dignified changing spaces designed to reduce the risk of fire contaminant spread.

Health and safety colleagues played a key role throughout, providing the guidance and requirements needed to ensure the improvements meet current welfare and contaminant‑control standards.

On Tuesday 31 March, representatives from property, health and safety, HIAL, and instructors from both organisations visited the site to view the completed works and capture photographs to mark the occasion. The visit reflected the strong partnership approach underpinning this project, with all contributors recognising the shared benefit of the improvements to the facility.

Derrick Lang, Regional Manager South for HIAL said: “This project is a great example of partnership working in practice, with the SFRS and HIAL coming together to improve the training facilities at Dundee Airport.

“Training is an important part of the work for the Airport Fire Service, not only to remain compliant with regulatory requirements but also to ensure that our teams are prepared and skilled to deal with any potential incident.”

These improvements strengthen the site’s compliance and enhance safety for SFRS personnel, as well as benefitting HIAL firefighters who rely on the facility for core operational training.

The project is a clear example of effective partnership working, sustained effort, and a shared commitment to delivering enhanced training environments.

GC Sarah Robertson extends sincere thanks to instructors for their perseverance and flexibility while these works were being explored, approved, and delivered. Their continued professionalism ensured training delivery remained safe and effective throughout the process.
