Former emergency call handler returns to blue light services as firefighter control
Neil is among 13 new Operations Control staff who will now begin their careers across our three Operations Control rooms in Edinburgh, Dundee, and Johnstone.
After completing 15 weeks of training, Neil Spiers graduated as a firefighter control and will begin a new chapter with the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS).
The 29-year-old, who will be based at Edinburgh Operations Control, joins the SFRS with previous experience in emergency call handling.
While those skills have provided a valuable foundation, Neil says the firefighter control role has challenged him to learn much more and develop a wider range of responsibilities.
Neil recalled: “After weeks of training, I quickly realised that the role involves a much broader range of responsibilities.
“We mobilise crews, support incident command, manage ongoing incidents and also work closely with partner agencies.”
Since joining in March, Neil has completed a mix of classroom-based learning, practical exercises and operational experience across the National Training Centre in Cambuslang, South Lanarkshire and Newbridge, as well as the control room in Edinburgh.
Originally from Pencaitland in East Lothian, Neil spent five years working within an ambulance control room environment before pursuing other opportunities.
Following a career break in 2022, during which he travelled across Europe, he returned to Scotland and worked in several different roles before deciding to return to an emergency services setting.
Neil said: “I wanted to go back to an environment that I knew but also have the opportunity to develop the skills I already have while learning a lot more at the same time.”
“I particularly enjoyed the balance between theory and practical training, from learning new systems, role-play exercises and working alongside experienced colleagues.”
He continued: “The training has been enjoyable. The mentors were brilliant. Learning in smaller groups also gave us more opportunities to ask questions, get support and learn from each other.
“My previous experience definitely helped, but this role is much more varied.
“It’s been a learning curve and a lot of information to take on, but the support from colleagues and mentors has been excellent.”
As he prepares to begin his new career, Neil is eager to put his training into practice and continue building on the skills he has developed over the past few months.
He said: “I’m excited to finally get started properly.
“We’ve had weeks of experience and learning behind us, and now we’re ready to put that into action.
”Neil is among 13 new Operations Control staff who will now begin their careers across our three Operations Control rooms in Edinburgh, Dundee, and Johnstone, where they will play a vital role in helping keep communities safe.
Group Commander Control Patricia McDonald said: "The graduation marks an important milestone for our new Operations Control colleagues as they begin their careers with the Service.
“Behind every emergency response is a dedicated team of professionals who remain calm under pressure, gather vital information and help ensure the right resources reach those who need them most.
“I congratulate every graduate on this achievement. We look forward to seeing the valuable contribution you will make as you begin your careers with the SFRS.”
