SFRS urges high-rise residents to prioritise fire safety this festive season
As the festive season approaches, the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) is urging residents of high-rise buildings to take extra precautions to keep themselves, their neighbours, and their buildings safe.
The winter months often bring increased use of electrical items and festive decorations in communal areas, both of which can heighten the risk of fire. SFRS advises residents to keep common areas clear of decorations and personal items to prevent obstructions and reduce fire risks.
Additionally, we ask residents to avoid charging electrical devices in shared spaces. Help stop the spread of fire by never leaving waste or belongings in corridors, stairwells, or other common areas.
Deputy Assistant Chief Officer Kenny Barbour is the SFRS Head of Prevention. He said: “We are pleased to report that high-rise building fires have fallen by more than 50% over the past 15 years.
“However, the festive season often brings a slight increase in risk wherever you live, with a higher prevalence of fires in high-rise buildings between December and January.
“Fire safety in high-rise buildings is a shared responsibility, and simple precautions can make a big difference.
“Keeping communal areas clear and free of obstructions helps prevent the spread of fire and ensures the safety of all residents.
“By working together, we can enjoy a safe and happy festive period.”
To support residents, SFRS will be distributing fire safety information leaflets. Residents are encouraged to read through the materials and create their own personalised fire escape plans.
Community Safety Minister Siobhian Brown said, “As we head into the festive season, it’s vital that everyone takes simple steps to reduce the risk of fire and stay safe. These leaflets and the escape plan template set out clearly how people living in high-rise buildings can take steps to help prevent fires and protect themselves, their families and their neighbours.
“We all have a role in reducing the risk and impact of fires, and I encourage residents to read these leaflets. Taking small, simple actions now can help lower the chances of a fire starting and improve outcomes should one occur, thereby keeping ourselves and those around us safe.”
SFRS also strongly encourages all residents of high-rise buildings to familiarise themselves with their building’s specific evacuation policy. While most buildings in Scotland are designed with a 'stay put' strategy in place, some may have different fire evacuation procedures in place. Knowing the correct evacuation plan is a potentially life-saving measure.
If you are not sure what arrangements are in place for your building, you should contact your Building Manager, Factor, Developer, Local Authority or the Cladding Remediation Department (CladdingRemediationProgramme@gov.scot).
This festive period, let’s work together to ensure the safety of our communities. Small actions can make a big difference. Stay safe and enjoy the season responsibly.
