SFRS pauses to remember those lost in Kilbirnie Street fire

A devasting fire on this day 53 years ago is being marked by the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) to remember seven firefighters who lost their lives.
On 25 August 1972, the tragic loss of life occurred at a textiles warehouse on Glasgow's Kilbirnie Street.
Those who lost their lives were Divisional Officer Andrew Quinn, Leading Firefighter Alistair Crofts and Firefighters Iain Bermingham, Allan Finlay, William Hooper, Duncan McMillan and James Rook.
An annual memorial event has been held at Glasgow Necropolis and attendees, including SFRS Chief Officer Stuart Stevens, paused to reflect on the tragedy.
Chief Officer Stevens underlined the importance of remembering historic acts of bravery.
He said: "Today, 53 years ago, seven men went to work and didn't return home. They were not only firefighters, they were husbands, fathers, brothers and sons.
"They lost their lives while working to protect others - and that's why we will never forget them.
"Their selfless bravery acts as an inspiration to our operational crews to this day. It's truly an honour to be able to play a part in helping to ensure their legacies live on."
