Mhairi brings a wealth of experience from Scotland’s Third Sector, having served as Chief Officer of the Highland Third Sector Interface. She has also held numerous voluntary and trustee roles.

Mhairi’s role will be effective from 31 January 2026 when she will succeed Dr. Kirsty Darwent, who has served as Chair since 2017.

Mhairi said: “I am honoured to take on the role of Chair of the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service Board. It is a privilege to work with such dedicated colleagues who strive every day to keep our communities safe.

“I look forward to building on the strong foundations laid by Dr. Kirsty Darwent and to supporting the Service as we navigate the challenges and opportunities ahead.

“Together, we will ensure a high standard of governance and conduct as we continue to improve the safety and wellbeing of people throughout Scotland.”

This appointment is for a four-year term, running until 30 January 2030, and is regulated by the Ethical Standards Commissioner.

Dr Darwent announced in July 2025 that she would step down as Chair in line with the Public Appointment regulations, having completed the maximum of two terms permissible for this role.
