Firefighter Kaitlin Irving is proving that strength, resilience, and compassion are just as vital as any piece of equipment, and that being a single parent is no barrier to excelling in a challenging, rewarding career.

When Kaitlin first applied to become a firefighter, she wasn’t sure how it would fit with her life as a parent.

Two and a half years later, she’s thriving at Falkirk Community Fire Station and encouraging others to consider a career they may never have thought possible.

She remembered: “I always wanted to join the emergency services. I looked into the fire and rescue service, and it just clicked.

“The shift pattern, the values, it suited my life and who I am.”

Now in the final phase of her development, Kaitlin is well on her way to becoming a fully qualified firefighter. Her journey hasn’t always been easy, but it’s been life-changing.

She said: “Before I joined, I was studying and juggling jobs, trying to figure out what came next.

“When I saw the fire and rescue service was recruiting, I did my research.

“I knew it was physically and mentally demanding, but I also knew I had what it takes.”

This role will push you, but it will reward you more than you can imagine.

With a seven-year-old son, Connor, at home, Kaitlin was initially concerned about managing shift work. But she says the job has actually improved her family life.

Kaitlin said: “The four-on, four-off shift pattern works really well. I’ve never missed a school show or football game.”

Her colleagues are also incredibly supportive. They’ve covered her shifts so she can be with her son if she has to. She added: “This job gives me time with Connor and a career I love.”

Being a firefighter is a career full of purpose. You are not just responding to fires, but you are out in the community, engaging with people, making a difference.

Kaitlin said: “Some days are tough, but we look out for each other.

“The camaraderie is real. You come to work with a lot of friends.”

She also wants to challenge perceptions about who can be a firefighter. She added: “People are surprised when they realised I’m a firefighter.

“But strength isn’t just physical, but also mentally. Everyone brings something to the team, and we thrive on those differences.”

To those considering applying, Kaitlin’s message is clear: “You don’t have to be a certain type of person, just be committed, ready to work hard, and up for the challenge.

“This role will push you, but it will reward you more than you can imagine.”
