Appeal to communities following attacks on firefighters in Ayrshire

The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) is appealing to communities across Ayrshire to help keep emergency responders safe following recent attacks on firefighters within the region.

Crews have been targeted with missiles in recent weeks while responding to emergencies. Thankfully, no injuries occurred, but one appliance did have to be temporarily removed from duty.

Area Commander Kevin Murphy is the Local Senior Officer for East, North and South Ayrshire.

He said: "Our staff go to work each and every day to help and protect others, so it's completely unacceptable for them to be met with mindless violence.

"People should understand that any attack on SFRS personnel or appliances can delay us in responding to genuine emergencies where lives may be at risk. That's the reality of the situation.

"We know the vast majority of people will be disgusted by this kind of antisocial behaviour and would ask them to work with us to keep emergency responders safe."

Area Commander Murphy continued: "Bonfire Night is our busiest period of the year and our staff are providing education to schools and community groups and liaising with partner agencies to prevent incidents to ensure people stay safe.

"It's therefore really important they are able to go about their duties without having to worry about being targeted.

"I'd like to appeal to our communities to support us during this busy period by following all safety guidance and by respecting all emergency service workers."
