HR manager stocks larder to support families

Filling up food parcels at a Newton Mearns rugby club is keeping Rachel Fishlock busy when she's not doing her day job with the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service.

As a mother of four Rachel (41) knows only too well how much it costs to keep her own food cupboards stocked up, but she recognised that many families in her area were finding this difficult at the moment.

Along with a local friend, HR manager Rachel set up the East Renfrewshire Larder, which is providing supplies to dozens of local families.

The confidential delivery service offers breakfast, lunch and dinner packages, as well as household goods and sanitary products - all packed by volunteers at Whitecraigs Rugby Club on Aurs Road.

Rachel, from Newton Mearns, said: "Many parents who need help will simply struggle on and go without to feed their kids. Many people on their own simply have nowhere to turn, but we're here to support them.

“The pandemic has plunged many people into poverty that would never have thought it was a possibility and we want everyone to know there is help out there – no referral, no means-testing required. Our number one principle is dignity and we go by the ethos that if someone is brave enough to ask for help then they need it.

“The response to date has been fantastic and we wouldn’t be able to continue to support our community without the generous donations and the volunteers giving up their time.”
