Firefighters contain well-developed fire at flat above shop

The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service was alerted this morning to a fire at a town centre flat.

Operations Control was informed at 5.28am on Saturday, 15 October that the fire had taken hold of the residential property above a shop in Main Street, Kilbirnie.

They immediately mobilised three fire engines and a high reach appliance to the scene.

There were no casualties. Firefighters tackled the well-developed fire using hose reel jets.

At around 6am the roof collapsed and the fire began to spread to the shop below.

The SFRS requested the attendance of Police Scotland, Scottish Gas, Scottish Power and local authority building control.

The fire was thereafter contained. The SFRS remains at the scene.
