The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) is recruiting for Retained Duty System (RDS) firefighters for West Calder community fire station.
We are looking for men and women to carry out a range of duties including attending a wide variety of emergency incidents, as well as carrying out work within the local communities.
As an RDS (part-time) firefighter you will be 'on call' to respond to a range of emergencies. On average, you could be called out two or three times a week for a couple of hours. If you can't be available all of the time it's not a problem however the Service is particularly keen to hear from people who are available during weekdays.
A key aim of the SFRS is to reflect the communities that we work in, to engage positively with people living and working within these communities and to make you aware that you too could have a rewarding and challenging career in the Service.
RDS firefighters come from every walk of life, including shopkeepers, builders, plumbers, farmers, secretaries, engineers and directors of companies, together with people who are not currently employed. Previous experience is not required thanks to the comprehensive training programme.
You must be able to get to West Calder fire station quickly after being alerted by a bleeper and the role can be physically demanding and therefore physical fitness is very important.
In order to encourage more applications, we are holding targeted recruitment events for members of the community to come along and speak to our Firefighters about their job and experiences, as well as taking the opportunity to try out some of the practical aspects of the role.
Station Manager Martyn Brandrick said: “These events are an excellent opportunity for us to encourage people to consider a career as a Firefighter, find out about the recruitment process and to try some practical aspects of the role. Everyone who attends will hopefully find it a very positive and worthwhile experience.”
Our events will be held in West Calder fire station, Polbeth Road, Polbeth on 6th February from 10am-2pm and 8th February from 6pm-9pm.
