Issued by an SFRS officer tasked with out-of-hours media liaison

At approximately 17:26hrs on 29 April two fire appliances from the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) were mobilised to reports of a fire in a three storey building in the Thorntonhall area of East Kilbride after several calls were received at SFRS Fire Control Johnstone.

On arrival the incident commander identified a rapidly developing fire situation and requested an addition two appliance be mobilised to the incident.

Eight firefighters using two main water jets and two hosereel jets attacked the fire from inside the building.

Despite efforts to extinguish the fire the building structure began to show signs of instability and the decision was taken to fight the fire externally using a specialist height appliance.

The cause of the fire will be the subject of an investigation and here is no further information available at this time.
