External premises information plates

An external premises information plate displays key operational information to assist firefighters attending an incident or carrying out inspections at high rise domestic buildings.

Buildings that require information plates

External premises information plates should be installed on all:

  • New high-rise domestic buildings
  • Converted high-rise domestic buildings
  • Existing high-rise domestic buildings where works affecting common areas or the building envelope are subject to any of the fire safety standards set out in Section 2 (Fire) of the Building Standards Technical Handbook

Installation of information plates

Information plates should be installed the above, or close to, the building’s main entrance.

Install plates at a minimum height of 3.5 metres above the adjoining ground.

Fix plates securely using:

  • screws and wall plugs; or
  • a strong weatherproof bonding solution.

Information plate design and materials

Information plates should meet the following specifications:

  • Colour: Yellow
  • Minimum size: 600 mm × 600 mm
  • Material: Di-Bond aluminium composite
  • Lettering font: Helvetica
  • Text size: varies depending on characters per box but should be clear and readable from ground level

Required information on plate

Each plate should display the following information:

  • Building address
  • Building height in metres (m)
  • Total number of floors contained within the building
  • Whether the building contains maisonettes, with arrows denoting entry being in and up or in and down
  • The number of stairs and their location(s
  • Location of the closest hydrant location and the number of hose lengths to the parking space provided for fire service vehicles
  • location and number of dry/wet riser(s) and the number of hose lengths from appliance/pump to the dry/wet riser inlet
  • Number of hose lengths to the furthest flat from the wet/dry riser outlet
  • Number and type (dry/wet) of rising mains

Number, type and location of all lifts, including the floors served by each lift and any relevant operational characteristics
