Some of those fires claimed the lives of firefighters who fought gallantly to contain the destruction. To honour Glasgow's fallen firefighters, the Firefighters' Heritage Trail has been created to tell the stories of some of the people and places that have played an important part in the history of firefighting in Glasgow.

Twelve memorial plaques have been set into the pavement to mark the sites where firefighters lost their lives. In addition, we have identified several further sites of special interest relating to the history of the fire service in Glasgow.

In 2010, serving and retired firefighters commemorated the 50th Anniversary of the Cheapside Street Fire Disaster which took place on the 28th March 1960, and at which 14 firefighters and five salvage corps officers died as a result of a massive explosion at a distillery and whisky storage facility.

In preparation for the 50th Anniversary, the decision was taken to commemorate the disaster in a significant way, including the refurbishment of the monument in the City Necropolis and by the placing of a marker on the site of the disaster.

Furthermore, it was decided that as a tribute to the many lives of Glasgow firefighters sacrificed in the service of the City at other fires, that suitable markers should also be placed on the street sites of these occurrences.

This is The Firefighters' Heritage Trail. Creation of the trail has been made possible thanks to the award of £54,000 from the Heritage Lottery Fund.
