High-rise fire in Edinburgh now extinguished

A large-scale fire involving a high rise building in the Bonnington area of Edinburgh has been extinguished.

The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) received the call at 4.10am in the early hours of Thursday 14 March following reports of a fire within a flat on Breadalbane Street.

At its height, more than 70 firefighters and 12 appliances were mobilised to the scene to tackle and contain a well-developed fire.

Six appliances and a height appliance remained at the scene to dampen down hotspots and monitor the situation.

Around 100 people were safely evacuated from the building during the early morning. There were no reported casualties involving members of the public.

Two firefighters sustained minor superficial injuries and were assessed at the scene by the Scottish Ambulance Service. They did not require hospital treatment.

Area Commander David Dourley is the officer in charge. He said: “The fire is now extinguished, and crews remain on scene as we work to bring this incident to a safe conclusion.

“Clearly this has been a complex incident requiring a significant response to limit spread and contain the fire.

“Thanks to our partners for their support and the local community for their cooperation.

“We anticipate a presence on site for some time and I would encourage people to avoid the area.”
