Recruitment Open Nights at Tongue and Bettyhill in Sutherland

The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service is appealing to the communities of Tongue and Bettyhill, for help in finding new crew members for their local fire stations.
The fire stations each need a minimum crew of four to ensure they can continue to respond safely and effectively to a range of different emergencies.
Watch Commander George Mackay of Tongue Fire Station said: “I would encourage folk in the local area to join the Fire Service. We are really keen to welcome people from all walks of life who can bring their skills and unique life experience to our team.
“It's a great way to learn new skills in a supportive environment and earn additional income – it is also an ideal opportunity to serve our community in the most rewarding way.
“We have made lots of efforts to recruit but would also ask everyone in the community to have a think and let anyone they know who might fit the bill that we are holding both these open evenings!”
He added: “Our open evenings are for everyone and we are also urging those needing some safety advice either for themselves or perhaps a family member to reach out and we will support wherever possible. Equally, if you just want to have a chat about who we are and what we do then the door is always open.”
Open evenings are scheduled to be held at both stations in mid-September, both as an opportunity for anyone wishing to join to find out about what’s involved in the job and how to join, but also for anyone who may want fire safety advice or simply just to meet their local fire crew.
Tongue Fire Station will be open on Monday 13 September between 7-9pm. Bettyhill Fire Station will be open on Thursday 16th September 7-9pm.

· Retained Duty System Firefighters live and or work within 15 minutes of their fire station
· They are supported by their primary employers to attend incidents during usual working hours
· RDS Firefighters are equipped with transferable skills that benefit them and their employer
· They are paid to attend training, weekly drill nights and any incidents that they attend
· To become a RDS Firefighter, candidates should be aged 18. There is no upper age limit, provided candidates are in good health and can attain national fitness recruitment standards
· RDS Candidates attend a two-week foundation course where they learn to use appliances and equipment safely and as part of a team
· They then learn the fundamentals of Breathing Apparatus during a 2-week course
· RDS Firefighters are supported by training teams to maintain and develop core/specialist skills
· There are additional opportunities to attend specialist courses such as Emergency Response Driving (ERD), Road Traffic Collision (RTC) & Safe Working at Height (SWAH)
· RDS Firefighters can attend incidents with Volunteer Duty System and Wholetime Firefighters
· They also work alongside partners to provide safety advice in the local community
