Firefighters tackled a barn blaze on Balmore Road on the outskirts Glasgow last night (February 17), staying until the early morning to dampen down the flames.

Operations Control in Johnstone received a 999 call at 7.18pm reporting a barn full of hay well alight on the A879, just before the River Kelvin crossing. Crews from Cowcaddens, Maryhill and Knightswood were quickly mobilised and reached the scene in under 11 minutes.

SFRS personnel were faced with a 40m x 20m barn containing around 50 tonnes of hay, well alight with a substantial amount of smoke. Police Scotland colleagues were also called to manage traffic around the scene.

Firefighters with high pressure jets were deployed to strategic positions surrounding the building and they worked through the night to bring the incident to a safe conclusion.

The crews are currently conducting dampening down operations at the scene, with a farmer assisting them in removing hay to an adjacent field.
