Crews responded to fire at a church in Lerwick last night

The building was under construction at the time of the fire


Firefighters were called to attend a fire at the two-storey St Clements Church, St Olaf Street, Lerwick at 7.45pm last night (20 October 2014).

The church building was undergoing refurbishment at the time of the fire and two appliances from Lerwick and one from Scalloway were sent to the scene.

The fire caused serious damage to the extension. Crews in breathing apparatus used two hose reel jets and one main jet to extinguish the fire.

The fire was located on the ground floor of the property and firefighters had to contend with severe smoke logging.

A joint fire and Police Scotland investigation into the cause of the fire will take place in due course.
