Crews from across southern Scotland work through the night to tackle blazing barn.

The Scottish Fire and Rescue was alerted to a barn fire near Kelso, Scottish Borders, shortly before quarter to one this morning (Monday 26th August).

The single storey building, containing 75 tonnes of bailed straw, was already well alight when the first crews were mobilised.

A total of 14 crews were called to the scene, including personnel from Kelso, Galashiels, Livingston, Jedburgh, Lauder, Hawick and Coldstream fire stations. Firefighters in breathing apparatus, supported by improvised ground monitors and by crews dedicated to providing a continuous water supply, worked in shifts throughout the night to bring the fire under control.

The building’s asbestos roof required crews to take additional precautions to ensure their own safety and that of the public.

There were no casualties.
