A fire at a caravan in Melrose claimed the life of a man on Saturday night (July 27).

Scottish Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) crews from Galashiels and Selkirk were mobilised to the incident, which took place around 9:50pm, by Operations Control in Edinburgh.

An SFRS spokesperson said: "Firefighters in breathing apparatus extinguished the flames with a single high pressure water jet, but sadly a man died as a result of this fire.

"A specialist team from the Fire Investigation Unit in Edinburgh attended this incident and will work closely with our colleagues in the police to establish what happened."

The fire struck on Tweedmount Road and the main road was closed for several hours as the emergency services operated at the scene.

A Police Scotland spokesman added: "Police in the Scottish Borders are investigating following a fatal fire within a caravan in Melrose.

"Enquiries into the full circumstances surrounding this fire are ongoing and anyone who can assist police with their investigation is asked to come forward immediately."
