East Ayrshire crews tackle industrial unit blaze

Firefighters work to bring intense fire under control.
A blaze at a vacant commercial unit on Sunday (June 23) saw firefighters from across East Ayrshire work to bring flames under control.
Reports of a fire at Caponacre Industrial Estate in Cumnock were made to the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) shortly before 5pm, with Operations Control in Johnstone mobilising two appliances from the town’s own community fire station.
A spokesperson for SFRS said: “Crews from Cumnock reached the scene within a minute of being mobile and discovered the premises were well alight.
“With the possibility of people within the building, an initial attack on the blaze was made by firefighters using two high pressure main water jets, while additional resources were sent from Mauchline and New Cumnock.
“Crews did not find anyone within the premises but, due to the intensity of the fire, conducting a full search of the property was simply not possible at that time.
“The incident commander liaised closely with colleagues from Police Scotland to establish the likelihood of anyone being inside the building, and its owner indicated no-one was thought to be present.
“Firefighters continued battling to bring the blaze under control, with five appliances and support vehicles involved in the operation, including one high-reach appliance used as an observation platform.
“Residents living in nearby homes were advised to keep their windows and doors closed due to the volume of smoke being produced by the fire.”
A full investigation into the incident will be carried out jointly by Police Scotland and the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service.
