Firefighters battle to protect communities

Homes were left without power when a wild fire damaged electricity lines in north-west Sutherland.

Firefighters moved to bring the blaze under control as it threatened properties in Scourie and Eddrachilles, near to Cape Wrath.

Crews from Durness, Lairg, Lochiver and Scourie were all involved in efforts to tackle the fire, operating between 10pm Friday (March 22) and 2:40pm Saturday (March 23).

High winds fanned the flames and hampered efforts to extinguish the fire. A spokesperson for the fire service said the incident demonstrates the need to take care in the countryside.
