Early morning tragedy hits Cambuslang

The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) mobilised fire appliances from Clydesmill and Polmadie community fire stations following a report of a flat on fire in the Cambuslang area shortly after 1:30am today (Wednesday, March 20).

On arrival six firefighters wearing breathing apparatus entered the property and quickly extinguished the fire using one main hose line and conducted a search of the property. Tragically however, during this search crews discovered an elderly female who had lost her life as a result of the fire.

Following the incident Assistant Chief Officer David Goodhew said: "I would like to express that our thoughts are with the family and friends of this lady at this time."

The SFRS Incident Research and Investigation Section will conduct a joint investigation with Police Scotland to determine the cause of the fire. Although the cause is still under investigation, the Fire Service would like to remind members of the public that home fire safety visits, which include the fitting of smoke detectors where required, are available free of charge.

Visits can be arranged by calling 0800 0731 999 or your local fire station. Alternatively, residents can text "check" to 61611 or complete an online form on the SFRS website.
