Youth Engagement Programme
Young Firefighters is our Youth Engagement programme designed for 14-17 year olds delivered by firefighters, non-operational SFRS staff and adult volunteers from the local community.
Young Firefighters (YFF) meet one night per week and there may also be activities that take place at the weekend. In addition to firefighting skills the Young Firefighters help young people to develop various skills, including teamwork, problem solving, leadership and communication preparing young people for adult life.
Young firefighters can also play an active role in their communities and may be asked to support local and national SFRS community safety events and initiatives. There exists an abundance of opportunities within the YFF programme for young people to access new and exciting activities, some of which are unique to the YFF programme.
Activities which the YFF have taken part in varies from rock-climbing, abseiling, canyoning, gorge walking, weaselling, raft-building and kayaking to name but a few. The more unique opportunities include drill competitions, which take place locally, nationally and internationally. Teams from across the UK get together every two years to compete for the two qualifying places to attend the European Fire Cadet competition the following year. On top of this our YFF also have the chance to drill at SFRS National Training Centre in Cambuslang, where they get to utilise state of the art facilities.
Currently we have units in Dumbarton, Campbeltown, Kilmarnock and Islay, for more information on how to join please get in touch email - SFRS.YouthEngagement@firescotland.gov.uk.
