Firefighters to climb Ben Nevis for charity
28 July 2017
A crew of three from Denny Fire Station will take on Police officers as they race to the top.
A group of Firefighters will attempt to reach new heights when they scale Britain’s highest mountain for charity next weekend – in full fire kit.
Darren Ryan, David Ansley and Derek Dalrymple are currently in training to climb all 4,411 feet of the mighty Ben Nevis on Sunday, August 6.
The Denny-based crew is taking on the epic challenge to assist people and families experiencing the impact of mental illness. And they will do it dressed in full personal protective equipment – and against a team from Police Scotland!
Crew Manager Darren Ryan said: “Our Police colleagues decided to extend a Falkirk charities challenge our way.
“Firefighters always stand ready to assist charitable funding wherever possible - and we also never shy away from a challenge, especially one from our police partners.
“But they decided to take the challenge one step further by asking us to undertake the task in full uniform which – as you can imagine – is quite heavy.
“We have of course accepted – but suspect we’re being deceived as there is no way their uniforms are as heavy as ours!”
The firefighters and Police Scotland officers begin the ascent of the UK’s most famous peak early on Sunday morning.
It is the latest charitable rivalry between both emergency services who work together to support communities.
Last September they played against each other in a football match in Irvine, Ayrshire and in May police and firefighters competed in a tug-o-war contest in Bathgate.
The police won both of those events.
CM Ryan added: “We want to restore the sporting reputation of firefighters across Scotland after a couple of surprising results in favour of our counterparts!
“We regularly have to climb steep gradients in our PPE so we’ll have the last laugh this time!
“Most importantly though, we are really looking forward to supporting and raising awareness for a very special local charity – we hope to raise a lot of funds.”
