Firefighters rushed to the aid of a graveyard worker who had become trapped while digging at a cemetery in Kintore this afternoon.

Operations Control in Aberdeen received a call from Kintore Graveyard at 1.55pm reporting the incident. The graveyard is half a mile north of Kintore, off the A96.

An appliance from Inverurie attended the incident. The walls of the grave had collapsed around a man in his mid 20s and he was buried up to his knees.

Firefighters were at the scene within minutes of the call and they worked quickly with buckets to free the man by around 3.05pm. He was then placed in the care of paramedics.

Inverurie Watch Manager Graeme Duncan said: "The ground appeared to be very sandy and that's likely to have caused the sides to cave in. Others working at the graveyard tried to help him initially, before they called the fire service for assistance."
