Car crashes into community hospital in St Andrews

Crews from St Andrews, Cupar, Tayport and Anstruther fire stations attended.
Fire crews were called to St Andrews Community Hospital early this morning (9 June).
Crews from St Andrews, Cupar, Tayport and Anstruther fire stations were called to the incident at 2:13am and arrived to find the car on fire and embedded within the wall of the hospital.
Firefighters quickly put out the fire and successfully contained it to the area around vehicle. Fifteen patients were moved to another area of the hospital while the incident was being dealt with. They were returned to their ward area before 5am.
The part of the hospital used by GP services has suffered significant structural damage.
Group Manager Calum Bruce said: “Our crews arrived quickly and were able to stop the fire spreading within the building. The area of the building that was affected was fortunately unoccupied at the time of the incident.
“The incident had the potential to have more serious consequences. Partner agencies followed protocols to ensure the safety of all patients and staff.”
