Eight casualties at fire in ground floor flat in city's east ened

Fairburn Street 2

The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service remain in attendance at Fairburn Street in the East End of Glasgow following a blaze in a tenement.

All persons are now accounted for but there are eight casualties with injuries relating to smoke inhalation, head and physical injuries.

The Service received a 999 call from a member of the public shortly before 11pm alerting them to a fire within the ground floor of the four storey tenement building.

Local fire crews from Clydesmill, Calton and Polmadie were immediately dispatched and on their arrival were met with a well-developed fire. The incident commander immediately requested further resources to deal with the fire and attend to casualties at the scene.

Six firefighters in breathing apparatus used two high-pressure jet hoses to douse the flames and an aerial rescue vehicle was used to save a woman from the top floor flat. A number of residents have been evacuated from the affected and neighbouring properties.

The SFRS Fire Investigation Unit is in attendance and are liaising with police to determine the cause of the fire.
