Firefighters from Girvan, Maybole, Dreghorn, Colmonell and Ayr Community Fire Stations have worked tirelessly through the night fighting a blaze at a block of flats in Turnberry.

SFRS Operations Control in Johnstone received a call at 11.46pm and immediately dispatched appliances from across the local area.

The fire, in the top floor flat, had burst through the roof and the incident commander committed firefighters in breathing apparatus to carry out a thorough search of the property.

Eight firefighters wearing breathing apparatus tackled the fire using three firefighting jets and at the height of the blaze a total of six appliances and the Forward Control Unit were in attendance.

Incident Commander Local Senior Officer for Ayrshire, Area Manager Jim Scott said "This is an ongoing incident and our crews will be on the scene for a considerable time. We are working with partner agencies, including our own Fire Investigation team to bring the incident to a safe and satisfactory conclusion."

There is no further information available at this time.
