Scottish Fire and Rescue Service Operations Control Edinburgh initially received a call at 10.51am yesterday morning (24 August) to a person stuck in a lift at Greenside Row and mobilised one fire appliance from McDonald Road.

Having assessed the incident it became apparent that there were 13 people within the lift car that required to be removed and further appliances were immediately sent from Tollcross with the Line Rescue Teams from Newcraighall fire station.

Due to the nature of the incident, fire crews were deployed within the lift shaft to make entry to the lift car through its roof. All members of the public were safely removed from the lift car using line rescue equipment, e-draulic cutting gear and ladders. There were no injuries sustained but all were triaged and checked on scene by the Scottish Ambulance Service.  One female was taken to Edinburgh Royal Infirmary as a precautionary measure.

Fire crews worked continuously and tirelessly in warm and confined space conditions and successfully rescued 13 people, which included children, from the lift.

All emergency services attending worked in partnership extremely effectively to bring the incident to a close.
