Lightning strike causes fire at house near Carmyllie, Angus

Appliances from Arbroath and Kingsway East in Dundee attended the incident at the rural property
Scottish Fire and Rescue Service were called to a fire at a rural address near Carmyllie, Angus yesterday after lightning struck property.
The call came in at 11.44am and two appliances were sent from Arbroath. A further appliance was then dispatched to the scene from Kingsway East in Dundee.
Firefighters used two hosereel jets to extinguish the fire. which had affected the roof space of the property.
Station Manager Scott Symon was Incident Commander and he said: "The first attending crews were met with a well-developed fire in the roofspace of the property and worked very hard and exceptionally well in difficult environmental and internal conditions to restrict the fire and damage to the area.
"At the same time crews were required to undertake salvage operations to minimise damage to property in the rooms below.
"While fires as a consequence of lightning strikes are not common they are certainly not unusual.
"Fortunately the occupants of the house were aware of the fire at a very early stage and took the correct steps in evacuating themselves and alerting the fire service.”
