13 November 2013
Three appliances and a water bowser were sent to deal with the fire in the early hours of this morning
Firefighters were called to deal with a fire at Ritchie's scrap metal yard in Aviemore in the early hours of this morning (13 November 2013).
The incident was reported at around 3.22am at the Grainish Industrial Estate. Two appliances from Grantown on Spey attended along with one from Aviemore and the water bowser from Inverness.
The fire involved a large number of scrap cars and gas cannisters which were destroyed by fire. A mobile concrete mixer and plant were also damaged by heat, however, six HGVs and other plant materials were moved to safety.
Firefighters in breathing apparatus used two main jets and one hosereel jet to tackle the fire. The water bowser carries an inflatable dam and that was used at the scene. It is placed on the fire ground and used to supplement the water supply already in the appliances. The water bowser is then able to ferry water back and forth to the dam and fill it.
The fire was extinguished by 6.46am and firefighters finally left the scene by 8am after carrying out dampening down operations.
